Cigarette Smoking and Teenagers

Total Health Care for Mental and Physical Well-BeingWhy do people start smoking and continue smoking? Most of them start when they are teenagers for many reasons. They want to look “cool,” fit in with their peers, and are more likely to smoke if their friends and family smoke. Most adult smokers started smoking before they were 15 years old. Smoking creates an “image” that many teenagers associate with smoking. It’s being tough, cool, sexy, attractive or as a form of rebellion.

Why do they continue to smoke? They continue to smoke because it is habit forming. The chemicals, especially the nicotine reduces the withdrawal symptoms between cigarettes. Smoking is an addiction.

Teenagers can quickly become addicted to the nicotine habit. They begin smoking because their friends smoke, and continue to smoke especially in certain situations. Teenagers smoke if they are talking on the phone, after eating, with caffeine products or alcohol, and just sitting around with their friends. They don’t necessarily notice a “craving” just smoke automatically in certain situations.

Stress also can cause a teenager to smoke, or if they are angry, depressed, or bored. It gives them an emotional boost if their feelings are unbalanced. Third, it is physically addicting because of the nicotine in the cigarette smoke. This nicotine addiction starts immediately after a teenager starts smoking regularly. Teenagers are aware of the dangers, but increasingly more are starting to smoke in their early teens.

What does smoking do to your body? It damages small blood vessels, restricts the flow of blood to hands and feet, and could even cause gangrene and amputation. If you smoke you are ten times more likely to die early from stroke or heart disease. Smokers suffer from severe bronchitis and emphysema more often than non-smokers. Smoking affects your breathing and you don’t have to have bronchitis or emphysema. There is a decrease in lung capacity and a smoker will have a harder time with physical activities such as swimming, jogging, playing sports, or working out in an aerobics class.

Smoking is the main cause of throat, lung, and mouth cancer. It really does harm your body! What else does smoking do? It makes you smell bad. Smoke clings to your hair, clothing, and especially your breath. Think about kissing an ashtray, that’s what it is like to kiss a smoker. If you are a smoker, chances are, you’ve gotten used to the smell of the tobacco and don’t even notice it anymore. Remember other people can still smell it.

Smoking turns your fingers and teeth yellow, makes your skin age faster, and affects your complexion. As well as the health concerns, think of how much money you would save by kicking the habit.

The good news in all of this is your body can repair itself quickly if you stop smoking. Nicotine will leave your body in less than two hours; the deadly carbon monoxide leaves the body’s blood stream after twelve hours. All other by-products of nicotine are gone within two days! It only takes two months for the circulation in your arms and legs and even better news, your lungs start to repair themselves in about three months. After a person has stopped smoking, they will notice their sense of smell and taste returns, you enjoy your food more, and your skin will lose the grayish cast that all smokers’ skin has.

Best of all, your body will be free of stale tobacco smell, and your chances of getting heart disease or skin cancer starts to fall.

Maybe your teenager thinks they are immune to all of these symptoms by smoking “light or filtered” cigarettes. There is no evidence of any kind that shows a reduction in health risks by smoking light cigarettes. They are just as addictive as a regular cigarette, they will still cause heart and lung disease and they still contain as much nicotine and tar. You aren’t saving your body from health risks by smoking these cigarettes.

The important thing to do is to talk to your teenagers, keep lines of communication open, and try to point out the dangers in pre-teens and teens beginning to smoke.

Backpack Safety for Teenagers

Total Health Care for Mental and Physical Well-BeingChildren start carrying backpacks to preschool. Three years old and encouraged to bring a backpack to school! This sets up a pattern that is followed all through school. Sure, the little girls look so cute with their pink princess backpack as they get on the bus, but the bag normally comes home as empty as it went.

Backpacks can be useful for school-age children and useful for teens. They come in many sizes, shapes, and colors and allow teens to express their individual personalities. They’re also practical with the many compartments that help them tote notebooks, books, papers, lunches, and the many other items that teens need to carry. Backpacks are considered safer to carry than a shoulder bag or purse because the strongest muscles in the body support the backpack. The shoulder muscles, back muscles, and the abdominal muscles are used to support the weight of a backpack.

It’s recommended that teens carry no more than 15% of their body weight in their backpack. They can cause muscle and joint strains, and back pain if the backpack is too heavy or not used in the right way. Shoulder, neck, and back pain can result in carrying a too heavy backpack. When your teen is carrying a pack that is too heavy, they may overcompensate by bending at the hips, or arcing the back to be able to carry it. This compresses the disk in the spine to compress and teens could start having back and shoulder pain.

Teens sometimes try to carry their whole locker with them during school. They either don’t have enough time to go to their lockers between classes. On the other hand, they just don’t want to visit their locker. They may also have personal belongings, laptops, DVD players, and CD collections.

If your teen wants to carry their backpack over their shoulder, they may end up with more problems. It can cause them to lean to one side to compensate for the added weight and cause them to develop upper and lower back pain, neck pain, and strain their shoulders. Improper use of the backpack can also encourage poor posture. Girls are more at risk for backpack injuries because they are smaller and try to carry loads in their backpack that are too heavy for them.

Tight narrow straps can interfere with circulation when they dig into shoulders and can cause nerve damage. Weakness in the teen’s arms and hands, tingling, and a numb sensation can also be caused by too tight, too small straps on a backpack.

Those large backpacks can also be a hazard to other people. Your teenager probably doesn’t realize how big their pack is and it can harm someone, especially in confined spaces, like the aisles of a bus. They’re also a tripping hazard and injuries have been reported by other teens falling over backpacks that are extending into aisles either in classrooms or buses. The risk of falling for someone wearing a backpack is greater because your sense of balance is altered, especially while climbing stairs.

Some hints to helping your teen avoid physical problems and still carry their essentials in a backpack. First, buy a backpack that is lightweight to start with. Leather may look cooler but they will add extra weight that your teen doesn’t need to carry. A lightweight canvas or nylon bag is recommended. They should be equipped with two padded, wide shoulder straps that won’t dig into their shoulders. A waist belt can also help by spreading the weight more evenly over the body. It also doesn’t hurt to find one with a padded back that will give them extra carrying comfort. In addition, a backpack with multiple compartments is good for dividing the weight more evenly.

Some teens that carry, a lot of belongings sometimes will use a pull behind pack similar to pull behind carry-on luggage. These may ease the back pain but are harder to get upstairs, or roll outside. Some schools discourage use of rolling backpacks because of the tripping hazard they present in the halls.

As a parent, if you are aware of the health dangers involved in carrying a backpack, you can be proactive in finding the right one for your teen and making sure they don’t overload it.

Diarrhea and Your Child

Total Health Care for Mental and Physical Well-BeingOne of the most common problems of infants and early childhood is diarrhea. This affliction is often caused by gastrointestinal infections. Diarrhea features loose, watery bowels and can be caused by viruses, bacteria infections, and even parasites. Probably your child will display various symptoms. Starting with cramps and abdominal pain with diarrhea following. It can last for a few days or a few weeks.

If your child experiences two weeks of diarrhea, this could be severe diarrhea. Babies with this often begin to lose weight and stop growing. They many not show any other symptoms but severe diarrhea is a real problem because it can lead to severe dehydration, especially in infants and small children.

Most diarrheas are usually caused by infections, but could be associated with parasites, bacteria, and viruses or even by toxic material in the system. If that is the case, other symptoms also go with chronic diarrhea, fever, nausea, vomiting, and weight loss.

If you find blood in your child’s stool, that is a serious infection that is causing damage to the lining of the bowel.

Rotavirus is a common virus in American children. Commonly found in children during the winter and early spring months, it can be found on play items and toys. These germs can live for long periods on these items and day care centers, preschool, and children’s hospitals are especially vulnerable. One way to rid your toys of this virus is to often and thoroughly spray with a disinfectant. It only takes a few minutes but is important to the health of your children and the children you care for. Frequent hand washing can reduce rapid outbreaks in these environments. Caregivers should set good examples, by washing hands after sneezing, coughing, or blowing their nose. If hand washing that often isn’t practical in that environment, you can substitute antibacterial waterless hand wash. Children should wash their hands before they eat and after using the toilet. Dirty hands carry infectious germs and carry infections to all areas of the body. The child could bite their nails, put any part of their hands or fingers in their mouth after they have touched an item that has active bacteria.

With frequent and thorough washing of their hands, another way to avoid infections that cause diarrhea is to keep all bathroom surfaces clean. Use a good disinfectant and if there is someone already sick in your household, it could help someone else from getting diarrhea.

Avoid infectious germs and bacteria by washing all fruits and vegetable before they are eaten. Keeping your kitchen counters and cooking utensils clean, especially after working with raw meat and poultry is another good precaution. Always refrigerate meat as soon as you get home from the grocery store. Cook them thoroughly and refrigerated leftovers immediately.

Diarrhea is infectious and can spread throughout the family or child’s environment by dirty hands, or by touching something that has the active bacteria alive and well on it. Again, frequent hand washing will help keep the infection from spreading.

Children and infants who have been exposed to a germ that causes diarrhea will start to show symptoms in as little as four hours or as long as seventy-two hours. The length of the symptoms will vary depending on what type of virus or bacteria it’s being caused from. Normally your child will recover after a few days. The child should rest and drink plenty of fluids. If the child is young or has a compromised immune system, antibiotics may be given to keep any infection from spreading to other parts of the body.

When is diarrhea serious enough to warrant a trip to the doctor or emergency room? If the child’s diarrhea has lasted for a longtime, if accompanied by fever, vomiting or severe pain in the abdomen or if you notice blood in the child’s stool. It’s especially important to control dehydration. Signs to look for: dry lips and tongue, sunken eyes, listlessness, and especially a decrease in urination. For an infant if they have fewer than six wet diapers a day that would be a cause for concern and a visit to the doctor would be called for.

Children and Fever

Total Health Care for Mental and Physical Well-BeingIt’s scary when you realize your child has a fever, but unfortunately, most parents will face the problem with their child. All kids get fevers and are usually back to normal within a few days. The way your child is acting is more of an indicator sometimes than a fever. Don’t be concerned if they are cranky, everyone gets cranky when they have temperature even adults. If your child stops playing, smiling, eating and drinking and they don’t urinate regularly, that is a sign you should contact your child’s doctor.

There are several reliable methods to take your child’s temperature. Kissing their forehead or laying your hand lightly will tell you if they feel warm. The most reliable way to find out if they are running a temperature is to use a thermometer. There are many different thermometers and ways to take a child’s temperature.

The old-fashioned glass mercury thermometer is not recommended for use because of possible exposure to mercury. If you have one of these thermometers, don’t just toss it in the garbage. It could cause the mercury to leak out. Talk to your health department or your doctor for ways of disposing this thermometer.

Plastic strip thermometers are another means of registering temperature but are not as accurate as a digital thermometer used orally or rectally. They are placed against your child’s forehead. These are especially good for use in infants younger than a year old. They will tell you if your child has a temperature but aren’t reliable for an accurate reading. If you require an accurate reading then use a digital thermometer.

Pacifier thermometers also are convenient for seeing if the child has a temperature but isn’t recommended in infants younger than three months. The problem with the pacifier thermometer is that they require the child to remain motionless for several moments, and that is nearly impossible with most babies and toddlers.

Electronic ear thermometers have become popular in the last few years. They measure the tympanic temperature, the temperature inside the ear canal. They are quick and easy to use in children they aren’t as accurate for very young children. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against using these thermometers for infants younger than three months.

The digital thermometer takes the quickest and most accurate readings. They are available for sale in supermarkets, pharmacies, and other retail suppliers. Digital thermometers usually have an easy-to-read digital display on one end and a flexible probe with temperature sensor at the other end. You can use a digital thermometer in one of three ways, orally, rectally, or axillary (under the arm.)

No matter what method you use to take your child’s temperature, there are a couple of things to remember. Wait at least 20-30 minutes after the child has eaten or drank anything before taking their temperature. Also, if they have been bundled tightly or held close to your body, this can cause a higher temperature reading. Don’t take a child’s temperature right after a bath, or leave a child unattended while taking their temperature.

How can you make your child feel better if they have a temperature? In most cases, a fever doesn’t need to be treated unless it’s causing your child to be uncomfortable. If your child has other symptoms that are causing discomfort, you can give them acetaminophen or ibuprofen within the guidelines given on the package. Never give aspirin to a child under 12 because of its association with Reye syndrome, which is rare, but a fatal disease. Fever medication will bring a fever down temporarily, but eventually it will rise again. Treat the symptoms and not the fever.

Give your child a sponge bath, using only lukewarm water. Don’t put your child in a cool or cold bath. This will only make the body react by raising their temperature. Cold packs, or cold baths can cause chills that also will raise your child’s temperature.

Never, no matter what your parents did, rub your child down with rubbing alcohol! It can cause poisoning when absorbed by their skin.

Dress your child in lightweight clothing and cover them with a light blanket or sheet. Overdressing can also elevate the temperature.

When your child is running a temperature, be sure to offer plenty of liquids to avoid the chance of dehydration. Water, popsicles, Jell-O, and soup are all things that will help them to stay hydrated.

Diaper Rash and Your Baby

Total Health Care for Mental and Physical Well-BeingDiaper rash is a common event in infants and toddlers still in diapers. An infection that causes the skin to become sore, tender, red, and scaly it can usually be cleared up within a few days. Diaper rash can occur because diapers are too tight; diapers are left on too long, or because of an allergic reaction to the diapers, wipes, or the detergent you are using.

Many different types of rashes that fall into the category “diaper rash.” The most common of them is the friction rash. Almost all babies fall victim to this rash at one time or another. It’s found in areas where friction is such as the inner thighs or under the elastic of diapers that are too tight. These rashes will usually respond more frequent diaper changes, diapers that fit correctly, airing out, and medicated ointments.

Irritant rash are usually found on the most obvious parts of the exposed areas. It generally doesn’t get into skin folds or creases, it usually appears on the cheeks of the buttocks. It’s usually associated with enzymes in the stool, or by soaps, baby wipes, topical medicines, or even the detergent you use to wash what is exposed to your baby.

An allergic rash is usually something that goes with the irritant rash and looks like poison oak. It’s more common on exposed areas. This rash isn’t restricted to the diaper area. Some babies have developed this rash by being against another person who has on a fragrance or lotion on. If your baby is susceptible to allergic rashes, it might help to have a baby blanket washed in your own detergent to use as a barrier between your baby and the other person. The detergent they wash their clothes in could also be an irritant.

Other rashes that are less common are Intertrigo that is caused by moist heat and occurs in the skin folds. Seborrhea rash that is greasy with yellowish scales. Psoriasis is a stubborn rash that shows up on other parts of the body other than the diaper area.

Wet skin is the most common cause of the various causes of diaper rash. Urinary wetness raises the skin pH, causes extra friction, and it intensifies the action of stool enzymes that irritate and inflame the skin. Urinary wetness damages the outer layer of skin and allows microorganisms to enter the skin layer easier.

You can prevent your baby from getting diaper rash by keeping the skin in the diaper area as dry as possible. By changing their diaper often, it doesn’t allow urine or stool movements to irritate the skin. Also, the same plastic that keeps a diaper from leaking also keeps the air out. That results in a warm moist environment where diaper rash can thrive.

Taking a few simple steps can prevent diaper rash. Change their diaper as soon as possible. Allow your baby to dry before putting on another diaper. Using a diaper wipe is preferred, but still allow the skin to dry before putting on a clean diaper.

Occasionally you can soak your baby’s bottom in warm water between diaper changes. Remember to allow the skin to dry thoroughly before putting on a clean diaper.

Some pediatricians also recommend leaving a diaper off your baby for several hours a day. This allows their skin to completely dry and breathe. If you choose to do this, it’s easiest to put your baby in their crib and change their sheets if they become soiled.

Using an ointment or cream with zinc oxide can soothe the irritated skin and protect it from further damage by moisture. If it last longer than three days, a yeast-like fungus called candida could cause it. This form of diaper rash is slightly raised and has small red dots that go beyond the original site of the rash. An antifungal cream prescribed by your child’s doctor can take care of this form of diaper rash.

New parents sometimes are upset when their baby gets a diaper rash, although it’s a common experience and can be treated easily. It will usually go away with care in two or three days. If sores start erupting on your baby’s skin in other places, or the rash doesn’t get better, you should talk to your baby’s doctor.

Depression and Its Affect on the Elderly

Total Health Care for Mental and Physical Well-BeingDepression is not normal for any age. Growing older creates problems and stress that can lead to depression. The change in lifestyle from working full-time to retirement may cause problems with those adults that have worked hard all their life. Serious medical issues and mounting bill also can lead to depression. Many seniors face the loss of their spouse now of life, they are losing mobility, and some even lose their drivers license. All of these can lead to increased isolation, loneliness, and depression.

Many of us get the ‘blues” or down moods but if these feelings continue for more than several weeks you should consult a doctor or professional to see if you have a clinical depression. Depression affects all areas of our lives, our thinking, sleep, thinking, and even our physical health. Older adults often face joint and muscle pains that make many of your leisure activities difficult to do. You lose interest in them because of the pain and depression sets in.

You may experience a depressed mood after a loss, or a dramatic change in your life. If you have lost someone you love, grief is a normal process the body needs to go through. Depression often goes with grief but if it lasts longer than a few months, you may have a clinical depression.

Clinical depression is a whole body disorder. It affects the way you think, your response to situations, and even the way you feel physically. This depression will strike at least three people out of every one hundred people 65 or older. It’s serious and can lead to suicide.

The good news is that 80 percent of those diagnosed with clinical depression can be treated successfully with medications or therapy. Sometimes it takes both to bring relief from clinical depression.

There are several types of clinical depression. Major depression makes it nearly impossible to lead a normal life. Many times, someone with major depression cannot bring himself or herself to crawl out of bed. They don’t enjoy life, sleep well, and are unable to carry on their normal life. This can happen to a person once in their life, or be something that happens more than once over their lifetime. Therapy is considered important in finding the underlying cause of the problem. A traumatic event that happened years ago may be what is causing the problem. A trained therapist can help you face those fears or traumas and help you on the road to recovery.

Bipolar disease is another form of depression. It is characterized by extreme highs, and extreme lows. This disease is often referred to as manic-depressive illness. This disease normally starts in the early to mid 20’s, but occasionally, it can occur when they are teenagers. Many are not properly diagnosed until they reach middle age. Sometimes a misdiagnosis of depression, and consequent treatment can cause major problems in family relationships. This form of depression needs immediate treatment. If a person has been diagnosed with bipolar depression early, they may still experience recurring bouts for the rest of their lives. If you think you or a loved one is experiencing any of the signs of bipolar disease, they need to seek treatment. This is something that just doesn’t go away. It probably will need medication as well as therapy. Don’t wait until it destroys your family or causes a suicide.

Symptoms of a Mania are:

Extreme and unreasonable irritability.

High moods that is excessive in quantity.

Decreased need for sleep.

Grandiose notions.

Easily distracted.

Increased energy.

Inability to make good decisions.

Excess energy, constantly on the move or talking.

Because bipolar is so often misdiagnosed, treatment that is suitable for that disorder is not prescribed. The result can be many years of depression, problems, and a host of other problems.

Depression can also share symptoms with other physical problems. That is why it is so important to have a doctor thoroughly go over your symptoms to be sure of the correct diagnosis. A serious physical illness must be ruled out before a diagnosis of bipolar or clinical depression can be given.

Depression occurs in heart attack and cancer patients at a much higher percent, so close watch should be given to a loved one experiencing one of these problems.

Controlling Type II Diabetes

Total Health Care for Mental and Physical Well-BeingType II diabetes is not as severe as Type I but should still be closely watched. Your pancreas produces insulin continuously and blood sugar levels increase after eating. Insulin production also increases; it unlocks your cells to absorb more sugar. This provides your body with the added energy and keeps a normal blood sugar level.

Your liver plays a role in keeping your blood sugar level as well. It stores any excess glucose and stores it in your liver until it is needed. In Type II diabetes, your pancreas makes the insulin but your muscles and body tissue becomes resistant to the insulin, or your pancreas doesn’t create enough insulin.

If your cells become resistant to insulin, they refuse the command to open the door for sugar. Why they become resistant is still uncertain. Researchers do know that excess weight, inactivity, and plenty of fat cells are important factors.

Treatment for Type II diabetes varies and some are able to control their diabetes with diet and exercise. Others may need to take medications, but in both cases, changes in your lifestyle and watching your blood sugar is important in treatment. Most Type II diabetics should consider recording their blood sugar level for a set amount of time to find out when your blood sugar levels rise and fall. Then you can decide how many times you will need to test your levels, Some may need testing once a day, or as little as only one time a week.

Several items can affect your blood sugar level. Food will always raise your levels for one to two hours after eating. Exercise and physical activity will lower your blood sugar levels. Aerobic exercise is good, but even simple tasks as cleaning house, gardening, or being on your feet all day will also lower your blood sugar levels.

Medications you take for other medical conditions can have an effect on blood glucose levels as well. Medicines to control high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and steroids may also raise blood sugar levels. Some high blood pressure medications can change your blood glucose and changes may need to be made to keep your levels evened out.

Illnesses also affect your blood sugar levels. A cold or other illness can raise hormone levels in your body and raise your blood sugar levels. While this does promote healing it can be a problem with someone who has diabetes. A fever can also speed up the metabolism and uses even more glucose and change the amount of insulin your body needs. If you are sick, you should check your levels more frequently.

Small amounts of alcohol can cause your blood sugar levels to fall. However, alcohol can also increase blood sugar levels. If you do drink, then drink in moderation and monitor blood sugar levels both before and after your consumption of any alcohol.

There is no specific diet for diabetes. It also doesn’t mean you have to eat only bland foods. You will need to eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains, foods low in fat and calories, fewer sweets, and fewer animal proteins.

Consistency is important in diet and keeping your blood sugar level at a constant level. The same amount of carbohydrates and the same portion sizes should be eaten at nearly the same time of each day. It is hard to keep motivated to stay on a specific diet to keep your diabetes under control. Enlist help from family and friends and realize you and your health are worth the effort it takes to stay motivated.

Exercise is important in controlling Type II diabetes. Everyone needs exercise, that is part of a healthy lifestyle. People with diabetes are no exception. The same exercise program that is good for your heart health and keeping your cholesterol low is good for diabetes control. Walking, jogging, hiking, cross-country skiing, and swimming are all great choices of exercise. Start out with a minimum of 30 minutes a day. If you have not been exercising, start out gradually and build up slowly. Listen to your body, start out with stretching, and warm up exercises.

Keep your weight normal; if you are overweight, it’s time to
lose weight. Sometimes weight loss is all that is needed to control Type II diabetes.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

The cause of chronic fatigue syndrome has not yet been determined. Research has been looking into it for a longtime. Some think that an infection can cause it, but there is no definite medical proof. The two main groups of people at risk for having chronic fatigue syndrome is those between 15 and 20 years old, and between 33 and 45. Two thirds of the sufferers of chronic fatigue syndrome are women. Those are typical years for CFS but it can occur within any group and in any society. Some people have CFS and are not diagnosed.

This illness causes disabling tiredness that is severe and happens after any physical or mental activity. Sometimes rest will ease feeling tiredness, but even if they get a full night of sound sleep, they may still feel tired and exhausted. A teenager who suffers from CFS will have muscle aches, pains, and difficulties with memory and concentration. Some will have pains in their stomach as well.

Chronic fatigue syndrome can last anywhere from three to five years, but some experience a much longer lasting illness.

Teenagers with chronic fatigue syndrome can have the feeling of tiredness after even low levels of physical or mental activity. They may also experience sore throat, tender lymph glands, headaches, and just a general feeling of being unwell. They may become dizzy when they stand and experience some sensitivity to some foods that never bothered them before. They may also become more sensitive to smells, bright lights, alcohol, and cigarette smoke.

There isn’t one specific sign that will a doctor the teenager they are examining are suffering from CFS. Many have been misdiagnosed or thought to have other problems such as thyroid problems, eating disorders, drug or alcohol use, cancer, depression and kidney disease. These other ailments will need to be ruled out before a diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome is handed down. Blood tests, and other concentration tests should also be done. MRI’s are rarely needed for the diagnosis. These are expensive and probably won’t tell the doctor anything new.

What is the difference between depression and CFS? Teens who have CFS still want to take part in activities with their friends and still can enjoy them. Depressed teens don’t get pleasure from activities they use to enjoy and stay away from people. They have to push themselves to do things. Teens suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome want to do their normal activities but are usually exhausted afterwards.

It’s difficult for teens with CFS to attend school and many schools are trying to be as helpful as possible with these teens as well as other teens with disabilities. They may have fewer classes each day, work more at home, or are given extra time to get their assignments in. Some also are tutored to help them keep up with their classmates.

Counseling and support groups can help teenagers who are going through this difficult period of their life. A counselor can provide both information and support not only for the teen but also for the entire family.

Here are some ideas that you and your teenager can do to ease symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome.

Try to get them involved in some activity every day. Spending time in bed will not help!

Keeping a regular sleep routine can also help. Avoid staying up excessively late and sleeping in the next morning.

Keeping a normal daytime routine is also important. It’s important teenagers paces themselves and avoids extra physical or emotional stress.

Help them keep in contact with their friends. It’s important for them to feel involved and not become loners and withdraw from the world around them.

Teens with CFS should avoid being around smokers and second hand smoke.

As a parent you can make sure, your teenager is getting a nourishing and balanced diet.

Some of your family and friends will not understand a sufferer of chronic fatigue syndrome. It would be helpful to find some literature so they can learn about the disease and help them to give the support the sufferer needs. They won’t look sick, so sometimes it’s hard for others to know how bad they feel.

Baby Boomers and Bone Health

One of the most important concerns, especially for women, is osteoporosis. The term osteoporosis means a porous bone that means fractures can result in these weak and thin bones. It is estimated that without a change in lifestyle, 12 million people will have osteoporosis by 2010.

Baby boomers are not concerned about osteoporosis because they think it is a problem only for senior citizens. This is a gender related health issue. For women the risk for osteoporosis dramatically increases as their ovaries begin to reduce production of estrogen. Bone loss can happen long before a woman begins to feel the effects of perimenopause.

Osteoporosis causes more than 1.5 million fractures a year. A fracture can mean complications especially from a hip fracture. When mobility is limited, it can mean a loss of appetite, circulatory problems, skin problems, and even depression. Unless baby boomers are made aware of the problems associated with osteoporosis, it will continue to increase in numbers throughout the population.

Osteoporosis can be a concern for men but normally not until after they are sixty. They don’t experience the sudden drop in hormone levels, but as their testosterone decreases, less new bone is formed. The disease does develop not only later in life, but also progresses at a much slower rate. Some lifestyle issues can affect men’s bone health.

Primary risk factors for osteoporosis are age, sex, and not enough calcium intake. However, you should consider other risk factors. For instance, if you have a small frame it puts you at a higher risk, also Asian and Caucasians seem to be more at risk. If you have a female member of your immediate family that has already developed osteoporosis or have suffered from bone fractures, that could put you more at risk. Other risk factors include women who go through menopause at an early age, medications for thyroid or steroids, inactive lifestyle, smoking, and drinking caffeinated drinks.

How can this disease be prevented? Is there a way to insure you don’t develop this condition in your senior years? You can help protect your bones against this disease. Stooped posture, fractures, and body pain are not a normal part of growing older. The two most important means of prevention are nutrition and exercise.

The body does not make calcium; it has to be included in your daily diet. When your body is not taking in enough calcium, the body takes the calcium it needs from your bones. This increases bone loss and influence how rapidly the disease progresses.

Lactose intolerance can result in a person not taking in enough calcium. Dairy products have calcium but also have lactose. Lactose intolerant patients may experience stomach problems like cramping, bloating, and diarrhea. One way to be sure you are getting enough calcium is by taking supplements. You also can take in calcium in nondairy products. Foods high in calcium are sardines, salmon, shrimp, cooked raw broccoli, turnip greens, almonds, tofu, and collards. Also available at any grocery store are products specifically made for lactose intolerant people. Lactose free milk can be found in the dairy section and another good source of calcium is hard cheeses. Also available are medications that if taken before consuming dairy products will help your body cope with the lactose it is taking in.

Vitamin D also helps with calcium absorption. This important vitamin exists in the skin and is released when exposed to the sun. Sun exposure for 10-15 minutes a day will help your body convert Vitamin D into calcium. This should be done when the sun is high but remember to protect your skin from the UV rays of the sun. You shouldn’t rely on sun exposure as your major source of calcium. If you are protecting your skin, you also are blocking what you need to produce calcium. In the grocery store, you will also find some juices and cereals enriched with Vitamin D.

Baby boomers need to start thinking about their bone health before they become seniors. A little prevention now could save you from pain of fractures in the future.

Baby Boomers and Health Problems

You may have promised yourself that you would never end up looking like your parent; overweight, inactive, and with various health problems. Some of us have already broken that promise.  Many of baby boomers have a dual role of taking care of children and elderly parents. These time constraints mean lunches and dinners are often fast-food choices, and there is little time for any physical activity other than it takes to keep their home or job running smoothly.

Studies show that sixty percent of the population is either obese or overweight. This means heart health is in trouble in our nation. Just being overweight can cause problems with your heart. The heavier you are, the more at risk for cardiovascular disease you are. Being overweight also increases your chances of high blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The higher these numbers are, the more risk you have of developing a clot large enough to block the blood flow to the heart.

Studies show that even if you have normal sized arms and legs but have a bulging belly, you are still at risk for heart disease. Research shows the larger your belly is, the more risk you have of having a heart related problem.

Reducing your waistline and bringing down your weight can play a big part in decreasing your risk of heart disease. One way to do both is through regular exercise. Research has proven exercise does more than just give you a better looking body, it’s also important in keeping your heart healthy. Statistics tell us, people who exercise regularly have a 50 percent lower risk of having chest pains or a heart attack. People who exercise regularly live longer even if they smoke. In fact, they may live longer than a nonsmoker who doesn’t exercise.

There are many benefits of exercise to your heart health. You will probably lose weight, or keep a lower weight, lower your cholesterol, and maintain a lower blood pressure. Exercise also affects the heart by keeping blood vessels healthy. Regular exercise will reduce your heart rate and blood pressure, and that will reduce demand on the heart. If you already have cardiovascular disease, you can help keep your heart rhythm normal and expand smaller blood vessels to keep blood flowing around an area that may already be clogged.

Doctors tell us, exercise is the best prescription you can follow for a healthy heart. If you are not used to exercising, start slowly. Try taking a walk around the block once a day, then twice a day, or stretch your walk out to two blocks. It’s important to listen to your body and not overdo it when you begin. Starting slowly will help your heart, encourage you to do more, and exercise will make you over-all healthier.

Another form of exercise for baby boomers to consider is the practice of Yoga. Yoga is low impact and concentrates on breathing and relaxation techniques. Any one of any size or age can start doing Yoga and have an impact on their health. Adding in the relaxation methods used in yoga practice and you can bring down your blood pressure and release stress that may be harmful to your heart. Yoga has proven to be effective in relieving stress, calming nerves, and promoting heart health. Many fitness clubs now offer yoga classes with certified trainers that can help beginners start yoga safely. Yoga practice urges you to listen to your body and build up to working to your full capacity. Special needs can be discussed with the trainer and routines custom-made to fit your body.

If there are no classes available, check out yoga tapes and other low impact tapes that will guide your new exercise routine.

It doesn’t matter which exercise you start with, what’s important is to make it a regular part of your life. Walking is the easiest and least expensive way to start exercising. Be sure to buy a good pair of walking shoes to protect you feet and you’re all set. Many malls allow walkers to walk inside during bad weather; some park districts also have indoor walking tracks available to the public.

Before starting any physical exercise routine, contact your doctor. He may also recommend the exercise for you.

Alzheimer’s Disease

One of the most common forms of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s robs you of intellectual and social abilities and interferes with regular life.  This disease usually affects senior over the age of 65. As the population ages this number is expected to quadruple.

Now, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease. There is progress being made by researchers to improve the quality of life for those who have Alzheimer’s. Drugs are being discovered and studied which may lead to treatments of the disease.

If you have been a caretaker of a loved one with Alzheimer’s, or have a loved one suffering with it, you know that it takes patience and love to keep you and them going.

If you think a loved one may be showing early signs of Alzheimer’s, what do you look for?

One of the most prominent signs is forgetfulness. It starts out with occasional forgetting simple directions or recent events. It progressively gets worse until the patient may forget even family names and objects they see every day. They also may repeat things they’ve already told someone, and put objects down and forget where they placed them. On the other hand, they might put something away so they will remember where they put it, and put it in such an illogical place that no one can find it.

Early Alzheimer’s patients have trouble in conversation in finding the right word to say. They may have a hard time following conversations or expressing their feelings. Eventually their reading and writing ability will also be affected.

Abstract thinking is something else that these patients have. They may suddenly be able to deal with numbers, especially in balancing the checkbook. Disorientation causes them to lose track of time, and it is easier for them to get lost. They may feel they are in unfamiliar surroundings even if they are home.

They have trouble with everyday problems, such as knowing that food has been on the stove too long. They eventually have problems dealing with planning, judgment, and decision-making. Familiar tasks become a struggle, even the basic activities like dressing or remembering to bathe.

One of the most distressing symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease is the personality changes that affect them. They have extreme mood swings and that is often accompanied by depression. They may begin distrusting those around them, be increasingly stubborn, and withdraw from family and friends. As they get progressively worse, they may become defiant, stubborn, aggressive, and take part in inappropriate behavior.

One report tells of a wonderful woman, good mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. When her family was forced to put her in a nursing home, she became aggressive to other patients and began using language she never would have dreamed of using before she fell ill. The staff had a hard time in restraining her in the nursing home. They found she was sneaking in to other patient’s rooms, uncovering them, and leaving them. This was so unlike the mother and grandmother they knew, they had a hard time even visiting. Most of the time, she wouldn’t remember her daughter being there that morning, and her family finally put an erasable board in her room so her visitors could right their name and the date they visited. That allowed family to know who was there and when.

Unfortunately, families don’t often recognize the onset of Alzheimer’s because it starts out slowly. There usually are no sudden changes in their personality to alert family members there is a problem. As the symptoms gradually get worse, or they realize memory is fleeting for their loved one, they may not realize until the patient is far into the advanced stages of this disease.

How the disease progresses and what the average survival rate will be depends on the individual. The average survival rate is eight years. Some live fewer years, and some could live up to 20 years with the disease. People with Alzheimer’s eventually will no longer be able to take care of themselves. This leaves loved ones with the burden of deciding whether to place the patient in a long-term care facility or try to take care of them at home. It’s a difficult decision and everyone must realize that it takes considerable attention, love, and patience to deal with the problems that come with Alzheimer’s disease.

Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer to strike people than any other form of cancer. Skin cancer is more common in fair-skinned people, but all skin types can develop skin cancer. The main cause of this form of cancer is from ultraviolet radiation from too much time spent in the sun. Catching skin cancer early, and avoiding overexposure to the sun are the two best ways to prevent skin cancer. The three major causes of skin cancer are heredity, environment, and ultraviolet light damage to the skin, mostly in children and teenagers. Studies show adults receive half of their lifetime ultraviolet exposure when they are 20 years old.

Our skin is the largest organ of our body. It protects our internal organs from injury, acts as a barrier between those organs and bacteria, and prevents the loss of valuable fluid from our body. It also regulated body temperature and communicates to the brain to allow for temperature, touch, and pain sensations. You can see why it is important to keep our skin healthy. Most skin cancers are classified as nonmelanoma or melanoma.

Nonmelanoma skin cancers develop on those areas of the body that are the most exposed to the sun. Body, face, ears, neck, lips, and the backs of our hands are where most nonmelanoma cancers are found. This form of skin cancer rarely spreads to another part of the body. They can be fast growing, or slow growing.

Melanoma skin cancer begins in the cells that produce the skin pigment or coloring known as melanin. Melanin also protects the deepest layers of the skin from harmful radiation from the sun. Melanoma accounts for a small percentage of skin cancer, but it is far more dangerous and life threatening that nonmelanoma cancer. The chances of surviving melanoma cancer are better if it is caught in the earliest stage.

The causes of skin cancer include family history of skin cancer, multiple moles, a fair complexion, exposure to coal tar, pitch, creosote, arsenic compounds, and radium, and severe sunburn as a child.

Your body will give early signs of skin cancer and both patients and doctors play an important role in finding skin cancer. If you have any change on the skin, consult your doctor. Any change can mean the size and color of a mole, or a growth that is darkly pigmented, or a new growth on the skin. If you have a change in the appearance of any bump or nodule, or if you have oozing, bleeding or scaling of the skin you should contact your doctor. Another sign to look for is if the color of the pigmentation spreads beyond the border of a mole or mark. If you have a change in sensations to your skin, for example, itchiness, tenderness, or pain, it’s time to go to your doctor.

What is important to know is that skin cancer can be prevented. Practice sun safety and avoid being out in the sun for long periods. Avid the sun altogether between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM. Try to stay in the shade especially when rays are the strongest. It will also help if you put on a long sleeved shirt to prevent the suns rays from reaching your skin. Your clothes should be comfortable and tightly woven. That means when you hold them up to a light you can’t see through them.

Using sunscreen is important when you are going to be in the sun. Using a sunscreen of SPF 15 or above when outdoors will help you protect your skin. Use sunscreen generously and always reapply if you have been in the water, are heavily perspiring, or have recently toweled off. Remember, sunscreen needs to be used on cloudy or overcast days as the ultraviolet rays are still filtering through the haze.

Putting on a hat will keep your face, ears, and neck shaded. A wide-brimmed hat is the best choice but if you are wearing a baseball cap, remember to protect your ears and neck with sunscreen.

Your eyes also need protection. Wear sunglasses with the best protection for the eyes and surrounding skin. Sunglasses with 99-100 percent UV absorption are recommended when you are in the sun.

Protect yourself from the most common form of cancer; you will also have younger looking skin and fewer lines on the face.

Adult Sleep Disorders

Adults as well as children often have sleep problems. Some that adults might suffer from are insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and restless leg syndrome.

Let’s define sleep. Sleep is more than taking a break from a busy schedule or resting. Sleep is an important part of our physical and emotional health. Sleep also helps the body recover quicker from injury and illness. Someone not getting enough sleep report having trouble performing tasks that involve memory, learning, logical reasoning, and math calculations. Even just a few nights of not getting your needed sleep can cause stress in your life and make you less productive. Severe insomnia results in psychiatric problems in some people.

Loss of sleep can be dangerous, strain relationships, and cause you to lose your concentration on your job. Three facts from the National Transportation Safety Board about sleep:

An estimated $15.0 billion dollars is what it costs businesses for sleepiness and lost productivity.

At least 100,000 police-reported accidents in the United States are because of drowsy drivers.

The sad one is, 40 million Americans suffer sleep disorders, and most of them go undiagnosed.

How much does your body need? That will be different for everyone. Most adults need an average of 7-8 hours each night if they are healthy. If you have trouble staying alert during monotonous activities or have a tendency to be unreasonable and irritable with family, friends, or co-workers, you need more sleep. If you have trouble concentrating or remembering facts, it’s another signal you body needs more sleep.

There are at least 84 sleep disorders that interfere with our quality of life and personal health. Some of these problems range from irregular sleep patterns, sleepwalking, nightmares, and insomnia. Other problems are restless legs syndrome, snoring, and sleep apnea.

There is help for those suffering from sleep disorders. Sleep problems can be caused by different disorders in various body systems. These disorders can be treated by different medical specialties such as neurology for narcolepsy and pulmonary medicine for those suffering from sleep apnea. A doctor can help you decide if you have a sleep disorder and the treatment you need for it.

Insomnia is one of the most common sleep problems for adults. Insomnia is defined as having difficulty falling asleep, waking up often through the night, waking up too early in the morning, and not feeling refreshed when you wake up in the morning. Insomnia can occur from one night to a few weeks, episodes that happen sporadically and severe insomnia lasting a month or more.

What are the causes of insomnia? Several causes of insomnia including anxiety, depression, pain, illness, irregular schedules, and drugs (including nicotine and alcohol products.)

There are ways to help sleep problems. One of those is to keep regular hours, go to bed at the same time each night, and get up at the same time in the morning. Go to bed only if you feel sleepy and do relaxing things before you go to bed. You can read for 10 minutes, take a warm bath, or have a light snack.

Exercising regularly will also help but only if you don’t exercise at least six hours before your bedtime. Exercising stimulates the body and the brain. Maintaining a regular schedule for all of your regular activities will keep your “inner clock” running on time.

Don’t have anything to eat or drink with caffeine within 5-6 hours before bedtime. Try not to smoke close to bedtime, and if you do take naps during the day, try to take them at the same time every day, preferably in the mid-afternoon.

Insomnia and other sleep disorders can be treated. If you suffer from insomnia more than just a few days, make an appointment with your doctor to find the underlying cause.

Restless Legs Syndrome or RLS can also be something that will disrupt your sleep. Usually it’s described as a creepy, crawling, and tingling feeling usually in the calf area. It can occur anywhere from the thigh to the ankle. When they feel those feelings in their legs, they have an urge to move whichever leg is being affected. Sleep problems often go with RLS because it makes it difficult to fall asleep when you are experiencing those feelings.

No one knows for sure what causes Restless Legs Syndrome. Diabetes, kidney problems, and alcohol abuse are believed to irritate RLS. It also could be hereditary or be a result of a nerve being pinched in the lower back.

Consult your doctor if you are having sleeping difficulties. They will be able to find out what
sleep disorder you have, and suggestions on how to deal with it.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

One of the most exhausting conditions that affect adults with anxiety disorders is post-traumatic stress disorder. This condition usually follows someone who survives a physical or emotional event that was terrifying to him or her. Brought to the forefront by our veterans, it was often called “shell shock” or “battle fatigue.” It’s been found to occur in both men and women who have had serious car accidents, survived a natural disaster, bombings, a plane crash, or violent personal attacks. Abuse in childhood also can cause post-traumatic stress disorder. How severe the disorder will be is determined by the length and severity of the event that caused it.

Post-traumatic stress disorder can be triggered by an event that happened in the person’s life, in the life of someone close to him or her, or something they witnessed. Many citizens of New York have been treated for PTSD after the events on 9/11. PTSD has already appeared in those who were affected by the devastating hurricanes that occurred in the South.

People who suffer from PTSD will have extreme emotional, mental, and physical distress if they are placed in a situation that reminds them of the event. Some may relive the situation repeatedly in the form of nightmares, or “flashbacks” during the day. Other symptoms may include sleep problems, easily startled, and have problems feeling loving and affectionate. Depression, a constant jittery feeling, or a feeling of being numb or detached from your surroundings is also signs of post-traumatic stress disorder. Anyone suffering from this disorder also stay away from places or situations that bring back bad memories and are sometimes more aggressive, irritable, or even violent.

These symptoms can also be found in other anxiety disorders so it is important to talk to your doctor for a diagnosis. Post-traumatic stress disorder will only be diagnosed if the symptoms have lasted longer than a month. It usually starts about three months after the event happens, but has been known to occur years after a traumatic event. Some will not be able to remember the event unless they are in therapy. Many block out events until something later brings the memories to the surface.

This disorder can occur at any age, including childhood. Depression, substance abuse, and anxiety are signs of PTSD. Some will recover in six months, for others, it may be a much longer period.

What is the treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder? Treatments will vary from person to person according to their medical history, overall physical health, and age.

The extent of how the disease has progressed is something else to consider. Your doctor should also understand your tolerance for specific medications and your preferences. Someone with PTSD is also susceptible to other anxiety disorders such as substance abuse and depression. Treatment is critical and can include medication, therapy, relaxation techniques, and biofeedback. Antidepressants or medications for anxiety are used and psychological treatment both may be used to fight this disorder.

In this era, mental disorders do not carry the stigma they did in previous generations. It is common now for people to admit to taking antidepressants or having therapy. Support groups have sprung up that help them get through the recovery period. Some of the most successful programs are based on the 12-step program from Alcoholics Anonymous.

If you or someone you love is displaying any of the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, try to get them to a medical professional. This disorder can lead to severe drug or alcohol abuse, depression, and even suicide. Emotional support from family and friends can help those who suffer from PTSD.

Treatment is available to all that need it. Veterans, if you are suffering from PTSD go to local veterans office. If you can’t afford to get the proper therapy or medication, contact your local mental health agency. State funded programs are available for those who qualify as low-income and don’t have a large income.

If someone you love suddenly is extra irritable, have violent outbursts, have trouble with socializing, and working, find them some help. If they are having flashbacks when they hear different sounds, smell some odors, or have feelings the event can happen again, they need help to work through the event and get better. Medication can help but finding the underlying cause of the trauma may be the most helpful in handling post-traumatic stress disorder.

Acupuncture Treatment For Migraine

For most people in the west, the entire concept of willingly sticking needles into your body is a bit suspect. In fact, most people probably have to reach a certain point of no return to even consider the very idea of acupuncture. Unfortunately, most migraine sufferers will no doubt reach that point of return at some point. Migraines headache pain can be unbearable to the point of excruciating and almost anyone who has ever suffered more than one migraine has reached a level of pain at which they would welcome a little pinprick if it meant a cessation of their migraine agony.

But does acupuncture actually relieve migraine symptoms? Although several studies have concluded that acupuncture is an effective migraine prevention strategy, nothing conclusive has yet been determined, though much research is available to suggest that it is effective for managing mild to moderate migraine attacks. How acupuncture treatment typically works is by inserting fine needles specific points on the body, which are then gently manipulated with the needles. This supposedly increases blood flow in the tissues. This blood flow is called the axon reflex. It works by dilating the blood vessels around the needle area, allowing for an increase circulation where blood flow had previously been poor. This process is called stagnation and is considered to be a very good response for most chronic conditions for which one would seek acupuncture treatment, including migraine prevention. This is not the only method of using acupuncture to treat migraines, however. Because the pain experienced during a migraine is associated with the dilation of cranial blood vessels, prompting the reaction described above by inserting needles into the head and neck might not be the best thing to do during a migraine episode. In fact, it could worsen the pain and bring on nausea. For that reason, some acupuncture practitioners try to reduce the amount of movement in the blood vessels in the head and neck during a migraine attack by restricting the acupuncture points to those on the arms and legs. To avoid unnecessary dilation of the cranial vessels, therefore, the head and neck areas are rarely stimulated. In addition, rather than treating the patient in a prone position as would normally be done, this method of treatment is usually done with the patient sitting up because the blood vessels are can be better controlled when in a sitting position. This greatly reduces the possibility of undesired dilation of the blood vessels following acupuncture. Under some circumstances, a high frequency electrical current is sometimes connected to the acupuncture needles in order to help with constricting of vessels. Of course, like most other treatments for migraine pain, acupuncture doesn’t come without its own side effects. Unfortunately, when it comes to acupuncture, it’s less a question of side effects and more a question of side injuries. Unlike the most common side effects of medication—nausea, vomiting, swelling, hives—when acupuncture goes bad it can be life threatening. The most common serious injury associated with acupuncture involves the accidental puncture of the lung, which often results in a partial collapse of the lung. In addition, one should also be aware of the dangers of infection. The most common infection associated with acupuncture treatments is viral hepatitis, which can potentially develop into a serious infection of the liver. Other possible side effects include bacterial infections developing locally at the site of needle insertion in the skin and elsewhere in the body. Generally, side effects seem to relate to poor hygiene and training of the acupuncturist so make sure you see some qualifications of your acupuncturist and get some recommendations beforehand if possible.

Throwing a money wrench into the whole idea, unfortunately, was a report sponsored by the Journal of the American Medical Association that claimed to find no available evidenced supporting the contention that acupuncture possesses any effectiveness in treating migraines. Until other studies conclusively reach the same opinion, however, the decision on whether to seek treatment by sticking needles into your body remains between you and your pain threshold.

History of Migraines

How long have migraines been around? Contrary to the beliefs of many, migraines are not a new disease, only a newly-named. In fact, based on the symptoms, it appears that migraines are among the oldest diseases known to mankind.

Conditions that have been linked to migraines were described in detail in Babylonian writings dating back to 3000 BC, and papyrus scrolls dated from around 1550 BC that were found buried alongside a mummy in Thebes contain even more detailed accounts that are remarkably similar to what modern migraine sufferers describe. Even the Father of Medicine himself, Hippocrates, described what are clearly migraines in 460 BC, when he described a shining light that was typically seen in one eye and followed by severe pain that started in temples and worked its way to encompass the rest of the head and down into the neck. Hippocrates was also well ahead of his time by being the first to correlate head pain with exercise and seven sexual intercourse. Of course, Hippocrates also attributed migraines to vapors making their way up to the head from stomach and thought that the headache pain could be relieved by throwing up.

The Ebers Papyrus, named after George Ebers who obtained it, dates back to at least 1200 BC is an encyclopedic compilation of various prescriptions and medical treatments, including one for shooting pains in the head consistent with modern day migraine headaches. According to the instructions on the papyrus, Egyptians were to use a strip of linen to tie a clay crocodile holding grain in its mouth to the head of the patient. On the linen were written the names of those gods that the Egyptians believed could cure their ailments. As in so many things, the Egyptians may have been preternaturally aware of modern techniques because it is believed that this procedure could possibly have brought relief to the headache sufferer by compressing the scalp and collapsing the blood vessels that were causing the pain. At the very least it made more sense than the previous Egyptian cure for head pain, which was to simply rub a fried fish on afflicted side of the head.

Plato is considered one of the all-time great thinkers the world has ever produced, up there in the pantheon of great philosophers. And yet he seems to have been so wrong about so many things, including migraines. As far as Plato was concerned, head pain was caused by people paying too much attention to the body. In fact, Plato seems to be in that camp that thinks migraine sufferers are a bunch of whiners and that it’s all in their heads, but not in their expanding and constricting blood vessels. It may be time to start second-guessing this whole idea of Plato being really, really smart.

Hua T’o was a Chinese surgeon in the second century who is given credit for the invention of anaesthetic drugs among other things. He was also perhaps the first to take to acupuncture needles to cure migraines. In one particularly infamous and, hopefully, quite rare case, when Hua used a needle to carve a tumor out of patient suffering from pain between his eyes a canary flew out. The man not only lived, but was cured of his pain.

Hildegard of Bingen was a medieval nun and mystic who began experiencing visions at an early age. Her visions eventually led her to write several books on health and medicine and natural remedies. Both her written accounts and the illustrations she drew that reflected her visions have led the belief that those visions may have been the result of migraine auras. Her visions were detailed and vivid, as were her descriptions and she has built a significant following who consider her to be the first migraine-inspired artist. The typical treatment of migraines during Hildegard’s time during the Middle Ages basically consisted of opium and vinegar solutions applied to the skull, with the vinegar thought to have been used to open the pores of the scalp so that the opium would be more quickly absorbed.

Centuries, if not millennia, from now people may be reading a history of migraine treatment and shake their head when they reach the 21st century. Could treating with the ingredients found in medication one day be laughed at in the same way as we might laugh at the idea of treating it by rubbing a fried fish on our head?

Achieving a Balanced Scent with Essential Oil Combinations

Increasingly, aromatherapy is one of the most fashionable types of alternative medicine in the world today. Perhaps one of the reasons it is so popular is that it is quite helpful for a number of different applications. In the world of medicine, there are a number of different applications. Women use it to ease labor pains on a regular. You don't have to be sick to benefit from aromatherapy, though. It can simply help you to focus your mind. It can improve your memory, improve your mood, it can even invigorate you after a long night. Making your own essential oil combinations can help you to take your daily aromatherapy rituals one step further.

If you intend to make essential oil combinations of your own, you must first understand a number of things related to essential oils. First, essential oils are classified according to notes. Top notes, on a general basis, are essential oils that tend to evaporate rather quickly. For the most part, essential oils that are classified as top notes tend to have anti-viral properties. Top notes are almost always quite fresh. They usually have properties that make them seem uplifting. They are also lighter scents than most. If you go to purchase essential oils that have been classified as top notes, they are usually quite inexpensive. They act very quickly. They usually have very little substance, and the first whiff of a top note essential oil will give you a good impression of the oil itself. Top notes do not last as long as some others. Middle notes tend to be most helpful in giving a sense of body to whatever essential oils blend they are being used in. They do a good job of balancing the blends, which is one of the reasons they are so popular.

For the most part, when you go to smell an essential oils blend, the middle notes will not always hit you at once. It may take a few minutes before you even notice them in any essential oils blend. Middle notes are warmer style fragrances. They have soft overtones that make them perfect for blending. Essential oils that are called base notes tend to be heavier than any other notes. They have a very solidified scent. Base notes stay present for a much longer period of time than any other oil, and they can truly help to slow down the level of evaporation most other essential oils experience. These are very intense experiences. Their rich nature tends to be relaxing for most, and they also tend to be the most expensive of all aromatherapy essential oils. In order to achieve a perfect scent balance, there are several things you should keep in mind. Remember that top notes hit hard to begin with, but leave quickly. Try balancing them evenly with a blend of middle notes and base notes. Remember that you want your final blend to be emotionally enjoyable.

You can start your first essential oils blending experience by choosing a combination of essential oils that you like and use on a regular basis. It is important to remember to choose at least one top note, one middle note, and one base note. While you can just choose a combination of scents that you think would work well together, if you are unsure about these kinds of things, stick with the basic notes formula. It will be a process of experimentation and learning no matter what you do at this stage. Grab a small glass jar for your next step. Dip a cotton swab into the first essential oil. Put it in your glass jar. Do this again for each essential oil that you have chosen. Don't forget to write them down as you add them. Once you have placed all of your swabs in one jar, leave it for a few minutes. Come back and smell it. Does it work for you? If so, you are ready to put the lid on the jar and leave it for several hours. Open it and smell it again. If you still like it, you are ready to blend the oils. Once you have blended equal parts of each essential oil in an airtight container, put the lid on it and leave it for at least forty-eight hours. When you reopen the jar, you will have the scent you created.

Absolutes Role in Aromatherapy

There can be no doubt that the full richness of an aroma is most perfectly captured in the living plant itself. When one enters an environment where the air is vibrating with the fragrant symphony of invisible molecules charged with the life impulse of a delicate flower or herb, it often influences the heart and mind in a deep and penetrating way. It can awaken memories of precious moments in the life journey or can unlock doors of perception, which give one a glimpse of a sublime life that is filled with wonder and hope. For thousands of years those intrigued by the mysteries of aroma, have sought ways and means of capturing those essences so that the powerful emotions and feelings evoked by fragrance in its natural state can be recreated even in the midst of the routine of everyday life. Most have found that one of the best ways to capture that scent is through the use of absolutes in a daily aromatherapy regimen.

Today many of us living in the crowded conditions of cities and towns are seeking for means of reconnecting to a natural world. In many cases essences derived from botanical resources help us establish a rainbow bridge into times, places and environments that speak to us of a rich inner life that is based upon a refined outlook on existence rather than the frantic accumulation of material goods. It may be that these sublime aromas speak to us of the of the wisdom and knowledge to be gained from "listening" to the trees, shrubs, vines, and flowers that have been our friends and companions for thousands of years. But no matter how we wish to explain the impact these aromas have on us, we can certainly say that it "exists", and that with a little interest on our part we can directly participate in exploring this world by entering into the domain of natural perfumery, or some other branch of the aromatic arts, crafts or sciences.

A significant amount of information has appeared in recent years with regards to the world of absolutes in aromatherapy. In this discipline there is a strong emphasis on the therapeutic value of essential oils and hydrosols. More and more research has been devoted to exploring the scientific basis of the benefit of this therapy. There is also a growing body of knowledge based on practical experiences of those engaged in this work. It reveals the important role the human interaction plays in the healing process. Often times those engaged in this work have a true sympathy and understanding of the people that come to them and take the time to help their patients develop a new attitude towards themselves and life. The oils aside from their specific therapeutic uses, also help to create an open atmosphere where positive communication can take place. One of the special attributes of natural aromatic essences is that they help a person relax and feel comfortable in unfamiliar environments.

The world of aromatic plants provides the raw material for distilling/extracting a wide range of sublime essences in the form of absolutes, essential oils, attars, CO2 extracts and hyrosols. One of the most interesting ways to use plant essences, though, is absolutes. In most cases, absolutes are the most concentrated form of an essential oil. Where most plant essences are made through steam distillation, absolutes are made with the use of chemical expression, concentrating them further than most people could ever imagine. This process usually begins when the plant material is soaked in hexane. After that occurs, it goes through a double distillation process at a low temperature. The resulting product is diluted with alcohol and filtered. For some plant essences, this is the only way to use the essential oil properly. For example, this is the only way that plants like jasmine and honeysuckle can be extracted. Absolutes are typically only used in the fragrance industry, but there are many ways that you can introduce them into your daily aromatherapy regimen. It is essential to note, though, that absolutes, unlike some other forms of plant essences, can contain materials that may provoke allergic reactions in some people. Using absolutes in your next aromatherapy experience may provide the enhancement you've been searching for.

Rapid Weight Loss Techniques

Other than physical appearance weight affects a person in many ways. This could be the overall quality of life, self-esteem, depression, health risks, and physical incapabilities. There are a lot of positive changes once a person experience weight loss. It is for this reason why a lot of people are searching for a weight loss technique that will surely trim down those fats and get a super slim head turner body.

The first thing that an over-weight should do is seek a doctor to recommend the best weight loss regimen. This will be done after a full physical examination, which leads to the determination of proper weight loss technique. And to lose weight fast and effectively four aspects of life should be changed: what to eat, how to eat, behavior and activity level.

Here are fast tips that can change an over-weight's life:

First: Fast weight loss composes of a multi-faceted technique that consists mindset, exercise, and in other cases, diet supplements. Begin by learning a diet food plan that can easily be accustomed with. Incorporate an exercise plan that allows even at least fifteen minutes a day like brisk walking, running, swimming, and dancing.

Second: Set realistic approaches. The ability to focus and have proper mindset enables someone on a diet to quickly lose those extra pounds. With discipline and proper mind set, a dieter will never be discouraged and lose focus.

Third: Listen as the body speaks. Each and everyone's body metabolism reacts differently to different fast weight loss programs and plans. Try substituting one program for another to compensate the body's reaction. Exercise program must be suitable to one's body, as others are not able to exercise as rigorously as others can. If walking is all that can be done, then walk for this is proven the best exercise. Muscles burn more calories than fats so it's also best to put on a little muscle and looking good too.

Fourth: Eat more fibers for it makes a person full sooner and stays in the tummy longer, slowing down the rate of digestion. A single serving of whole grain bread moves fat through the digestive system faster. Grains turn into blood sugar that spikes the body's insulin level. Thus, making the body more energized and ready to tell the body when it should stop burning fats or start storing.

Fifth: Keep away from fried foods especially deep-fried as this contains a great amount of fat. Although fish and chicken appear leaner than beef, this white meat can contain more fat than when a beef is fried. It is recommended for those on strict diet to opt for grilled food as this does not have or contain less amount of fat after the food is cooked.

Sixth: Takes lots of fluid. Drinking at least six to eight glasses of water a day keeps the body refreshed. Since weight loss depends on how the body eliminates body wastes, the body must stay hydrated.

All in all, discipline and consistency is still the best practice and the key to a rapid weight loss success. Light dieting, workout, and right amount of supplementation applied in a regular way everyday will result in faster weight loss than having a massive action only to be followed a return to old habits as this would only lead to gaining more weight than when the weight loss plan has started.

Adult Allergy and Asthma

More than 50 million Americans are affected with allergy-related conditions every year. Some of these allergies, such as mild seasonal hay fever can be controlled with over-the counter medicines or with no treatment at all. Other allergies can interfere with your life, reduce your enjoyment in life, and become life threatening. If this is the case, you should see a doctor for a comprehensive review and allergy testing.

When our immune system identifies a substance that is normally harmless as damaging to the body, it triggers the immune system to defend our body. Sometimes the body aggressively attacks normally harmless substances such as dust, mold, or pollen.

The body reacts to the release of the antibodies in various ways. Allergic reactions can attack any part of our body. It can attack the stomach, the nose, throat, sinuses, and lungs. Some of the reactions your body might experience is nasal stuffiness, discharge, sneezing and nasal itching. Sometimes itching in ears or roof of the mouth accompanies the other symptoms.

The eyes can be affected with conjunctivitis or red, itchy, and watery eyes. Skin can be red, itchy, and dry, hives or itchy welts can appear on the skin as well. Asthma is a common form of allergic reaction. Asthma causes shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing.

Several substances can cause allergic reactions. In fact, there are hundreds, but the most common allergens or triggers include things we meet often.

Pollen, we can hardly avoid pollen if we spend any time outdoors at all.

Molds can be anywhere, and in your home without you realizing it.

Household dust and dust mites, common in most homes.

Animal dander, urine, or oil from their skin. Many of us have pets and don’t realize what they can do to someone with severe allergies.

Industrial chemicals, these are common in household cleaners.

Foods, such as peanut allergy are often life threatening.

Feathers can cause allergic reactions if you are in a home with a bird.

Insect stings can sometimes be fatal; a bee sting can kill if that person has an allergic reaction to bee stings.

Cockroaches and the waste they produce.

Anyone can be affected by allergies, any race, age, gender, or social status. Allergies seem to be more common in children but an adult can suffer an allergic reaction even after years of remission. Allergies run in families even though it isn’t yet understood why that happens. Allergies can develop gradually over a period and can be caused by hormonal changes, stress, perfume, smoking, and other substances in the environment.

You can discover what allergens you have a reaction to in one of two ways. The first is to have a blood test that measures the antibodies to specific allergens; the other is the skin patch test method. Several well-known allergens are diluted and either injected into the skin or a small amount place under the skin by a puncture or scratch. If a welt appears or a red area on the skin it might mean the patient is allergic to that allergen.

Treatments for allergies will vary and are determined on your age, overall health, and medical history. Consideration will be given when deciding therapy on how bad the disease is, your tolerance of medications, and your preferences. Occasionally a person may only need to change their lifestyle and be sure, their home is dust and mold free.

For some it may mean a change of diet, especially if their allergies are food related. Several different food allergies are common. Reactions can be avoided by staying away from the ones they are sensitive to. For those who are lactose intolerant, many over-the-counter cures will allow you to cope with lactose products. You can enjoy an ice-cream cone without worry.

A peanut allergy can be especially harmful and all items with peanut or peanut oil should be avoided. Most candy makers now print on their packaging if the candy has been made in the same factory where peanut products have been used. This is a potentially life threatening allergy. Always check packaging of all candies to be sure there won’t be a trace of peanut or peanut oil in the product.

Allergies are annoying but controllable if you discover what you are allergic to, and avoid those allergens.

Benefits of Cardio Interval Training

In a long-term study of the health of the people of in the United States, the U.S. Public Health Service documented the chances of developing heart disease among various groups in the population. Long before the any symptoms appeared, epidemiological research could identify high-risk groups.

Among the highest risk factors are male sex, age over 35, cigarette smoking, high blood pressure, high levels of certain blood fats, and a family history of cardiovascular disorders.

Other researchers have added to this list another risk factor: the compulsive, hard-driving, highly anxious personality. The greater the number of severity, the greater the person’s overall risk.

These threats to the heart can be divided into two main categories: those beyond individual control, such as age, sex, and heredity, and those that can be controlled, avoided, or even eliminated. Among those in the second category are what cardiologists call “the triple threat.” These are the high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, and high cholesterol levels in the blood.

If you smoke a pack of cigarettes a day, your risk of having a heart attack is twice that of a nonsmoker. If you smoke, have hypertension, and eat a diet high in fats without any exercise at all, your risk is five times greater than normal.

The Healthy Heart

If these risk factors endanger the heart’s health, what enhances its well-being and improves its odds of working long and well?

Obviously, quitting cigarettes and eating a low-fat diet will help. The next best thing you can do for your heart’s sake is to give it what it needs: regular exercise or a complete cardio interval training.

The heart is a muscle, or, more accurately, a group or “package” of muscles, similar in many ways to the muscles of the arms and legs. And just as exercise strengthens and improves limb muscles, it enhances the health of the heart muscles as well.

Since World War II, several large-scale statistical studies have evaluated the relationship between physical activity and cardiovascular disease. One well-known survey compared 31,000 drivers and conductors of some bus companies. The more sedentary drivers had a significantly higher rate of heart disease than the conductors, who walked around the buses and climbed stairs to the upper level.

The why and how behind these statistics were bet explained by classic experiments with dogs whose coronary arteries were surgically narrowed to resemble those of humans with arteriosclerosis. Dogs who were exercised were had much better blood flow than those kept inactive.

The exercise seemed to stimulate the development of new connections between the impaired and the nearly normal blood vessels, so exercised dogs had a better blood supply to all the muscle tissue of the heart. The human heart reacts in the same way to provide blood to the portion that was damaged by the heart attack.

To enable the damaged heart muscle to heal, the heart relies on new small blood vessels for what is called collateral circulation. These new branches on the arterial tress can develop long before a heart attack — and can prevent a heart attack if the new network takes on enough of the function of the narrowed vessels.

With all these facts, it is now boiled down to a single question: What should be done in order to prevent such dilemmas?

Some studies showed that moderate exercise several times a week is more effective in building up these auxiliary pathways than extremely vigorous exercise done twice often.

The general rule is that exercise helps reduce the risk of harm to the heart. Some researches further attested the link between exercise and healthy heart based from the findings that the non-exercisers had a 49% greater risk of heart attack than the other people included in the study. The study attributed a third of that risk to sedentary lifestyle alone.

Hence, with employing the cardio interval training, you can absolutely expect positive results not only on areas that concerns your cardiovascular system but on the overall status of your health as well.

This particular activity that is definitely good for the heart is a cycle of “repeated segments” that is of intense nature. In this process, there is an interchange periods of recuperation. It can both be comprehensive activity and moderate motion.

Consequently, the benefits of merely engaging into this kind of activity can bring you more results that you have ever expected. These are:

1. The threats of heart attack are lessened, if not eliminated

2. Enhanced heart task

3. Increase metabolism, increase the chance of burning calories, therefore, assist you in losing weight

4. Improves lung capacity

5. Helps lessen or eliminate the cases of stress

Indeed, cardio interval training is the modern way of creating a healthy, happy heart and body.
